Brewing Innovation: RCIC Celebrates its First Year

The Regional Coffee Innovation Center (RCIC) marked an important milestone as it celebrated its 1st Year Anniversary on February 20, 2026, at the DSSC Regional Coffee Innovation Center. The celebration reflected a year of steady growth, shared learning, and a strong commitment to developing the local coffee industry in Mindanao.

Since its establishment, RCIC has become a space where educators, baristas, farmers, and coffee enthusiasts come together to learn, experiment, and refine their skills. The anniversary program highlighted this journey through a Brewing and Latte Art Competition, which allowed participants from across different parts of Mindanao to demonstrate their technical abilities, creativity, and passion for coffee.

A key part of the event’s success was the contribution of the board of judges, Mr. Rene Jane Visto, Ms. Emeline “Mimi” Sabado, Mr. Jason Bryan Lupo, and Mr. Dale Jhaziel Depacaquibo. Their professional insight and fair assessment helped ensure a meaningful and credible competition while encouraging participants to strive for excellence.

The center also expressed its gratitude to Dr. Augie Estrellada Fuentes, College President of Davao del Sur State College, for her continued support and clear vision for RCIC. Her leadership has played an important role in guiding the center toward its goals.

Top performers in the Brewing Competition were Mr. John Peter Carbona as Champion, followed by Mr. Rhovic Dal and Mr. Russell Sumaya. In the Latte Art Competition, Mr. CJ Boquiren emerged as Champion, with Mr. Fherulin Mercado and Mr. Kenji Urabe placing next. Their achievements reflected the high level of skill and dedication shown throughout the event.

As RCIC moves forward, it remains committed to strengthening partnerships, developing talent, and supporting innovation in the coffee sector. The first anniversary served not only as a celebration of what has been achieved but also as a reminder of the shared work ahead in building a stronger coffee community.
